JOEL RORIZ AZEVEDO

Double bass

Joel Roriz Azevedo is originally from Santo Tirso and studied with Professors Alexandre Samardjiev (ARTAVE), Florian Petzborn (ESMAE), G. Ettorre (Scuola Musicale di Milano), Rinat Ibragimov, and completed his postgraduate course at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim with Professor Petru Iuga. He was a member of the Portuguese Orchestra of Music Schools from 1996 to 1999. After an audition, he was selected for the European Union Youth Orchestra in 2001 and 2002. He worked with conductors Sir Colin Davis, Paavo Järvi, Vladimir Ashkenazy and double bassists Peter Pühn and Enno Senft. With this orchestra, he performed concerts in various European countries. He collaborated with the following orchestras: Coliseu do Porto, Filarmonia das Beiras, Sinfonietta, Academic Orchestra of Porto, Lapa Sine Nomine Orchestra, Musicare, Porto Classical and National Orchestra.

He participated in double bass courses in Portugal, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic with Ovidiu Badila, Boguslaw Furtok, Christine Hoock, Dorin Marc, Duncan Mactier, François Rabbath, Catalin Rotaru, Michael Wolf, Paul Ellinson, Thierry Barbe, Bartosz Sikorski, Rinat Ibragimov, Klaus Trumpf, Joel Quarrington, Thomas Martin, Miloslav Gaidos, Božo Paradžik, Petru Iuga, among others. He received the 2nd Soloist Prize at the “Young Musicians Award” competition in 1999 and the “Engineer António de Almeida Foundation” award in 2003. He received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation from 1996 to 2001. He regularly performs in recitals in Portugal and abroad, with notable appearances at the Coimbra Music Festival, Santo Tirso Festival, and the 5th Double Bass Congress Bass 2016 in Prague. He is currently a teacher at the Porto Music Conservatory and a permanent musician of the Porto Symphony Orchestra Casa da Música since 2002.
